Moving your business online in Panama: an expat guide

Domain, hosting, payments that work here, and how to actually get found on Google — everything an expat business owner needs to go online in Panama, in plain English.

Start with the job, not the website

Before buying anything, answer one question: what should the internet DO for your business? Bring reservation requests? Sell products? Make you findable on Google Maps? The answer decides whether you need a simple landing page, an online store, or just a well-managed Google profile. Matching the tool to the job is how you avoid overpaying.

The pieces you actually need

A domain in YOUR name. A standard .com costs roughly $15–20/year. Non-negotiable: it must be registered to you, not your agency — otherwise your own address can be held hostage. Hosting. Where the site lives; often bundled with maintenance. A mobile-first website. Most of your Panamanian customers will visit from a phone. WhatsApp integration. In Panama, business happens on WhatsApp — your site's main job is starting those conversations.

Getting paid: the part nobody warns you about

If you sell to locals, you need Yappy — Panama's dominant payment app (we wrote a full guide in English). If you serve tourists or international clients, you need card payments and possibly PayPal. Most expat-run businesses need both: locals pay with Yappy, foreigners with card.

Being found: Google is your storefront

Claim your Google Business Profile the same week you launch. For a local business it often produces calls faster than the website itself. Then make sure the site is indexed (Google Search Console, free) and that its pages target the searches your customers use — in both English and Spanish where it makes sense.

The realistic budget and timeline

A professional starter site in Panama runs about $100–$250 and takes days, not months. A store with payments configured runs more. What matters is starting with the version that does TODAY's job and growing from there — not paying upfront for features you might need someday.

💡 TD Solutions tip: The most expensive mistake isn't buying the wrong website — it's staying invisible for another six months while you overthink it.
